RESOLAR: The first comprehensive pioneer of photovoltaic recycling and regeneration in China
2023-12-11
ECOPV

At the 6th China International Solar Industry Conference and the Solar Waste-Free Supply Chain and Recycling Industry Conference held on November 15th, 2023, hosted by the PV Committee of China Green Supply Chain Alliance (China ECOPV Alliance), President and Cofounder Sai Peng of RESOLAR delivered a keynote speech on "Disassembly and Recycling of Decommissioned PV Modules." The presentation covered four main areas: the global market size of the PV recycling market, the necessity of PV recycling, research progress in the application of decommissioned PV module recycling technologies, and the technical advantages of RESOLAR in PV module recycling.

During the speech, Mr. Peng first introduced the relevant regulations, recycling organizations, and PV recycling market size of of France, Germany, and the United States. He also shared a new policy: Dutch importers that sell solar panels to clients in the Netherlands will have to pay a recycling charge of €40 ($42.50) per ton from July 1. They currently pay just €6.50 per ton. PV module importers will have to pay the fee to the OPEN Foundation, which is a Dutch nongovernmental organization. “The fee will be used for solar panel recycling. It is meant as a buffer to be able to keep stable pricing in the future, when the waste streams will rise sharply.”

Mr. Peng then pointed out, "Decommissioned PV modules contain toxic elements such as lead and fluorine, which, if not properly treated, can pollute the environment and pose a threat to ecological safety. Additionally, retired photovoltaic modules contain valuable resources such as silver, aluminum, silicon, and copper, and if not properly processed, can lead to serious resource wastage. Furthermore, retired PV modules occupy a large area, resulting in inefficient land resource utilization if not properly handled. The retirement of PV modules is about to enter a major outbreak phase. Through professional dismantling and recycling technologies, we can not only prevent environmental pollution but also achieve the recycling of resources, reduce the consumption of new materials, and thereby promote the sustainable development of the green energy industry.

The recycling technologies for end-of-life PV modules research mainly include inorganic acid dissolution, organic solvent dissolution, heat treatment, mechanical separation, chemical purification, and combined separation methods. RESOLAR's independently developed "GST Green Separation Technology" combines the advantages of physical and chemical methods and achieves a separation rate of 99.9% and produces 6N (99.9999%) silicon material from impurities removing of damaged solar Cells. Furthermore, it has already established a production capacity of 10,000 tons.

RESOLAR has been deeply involved in PV recycling technology and industry for many years. RESOLAR is the only whole-chain PV recycling group in the country with recycled silicon material technology at its core. The recycled silicon materials manufactured by RESOLAR have significant advantages in carbon emissions and costs, achieving a life cycle from decommissioned PV modules to new PV modules.
