The Australian Federal Government will Establish a Nationwide Photovoltaic Module Recycling and Reuse Scheme
2025-08-24

The Australian federal government has agreed with state and territory governments to establish a nationwide photovoltaic module recycling and reuse scheme.

At the Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council held in Sydney, energy ministers agreed to develop a national mandatory management scheme to prevent solar modules from being landfilled, instead promoting their entry into remanufacturing or recycling .

Australia's annual photovoltaic module waste is projected to nearly double in the next five years, increasing from 59,340 tonnes in 2025 to 91,165 tonnes by 2030. Urban areas will see the most significant waste growth due to concentrated household users. Additionally, as large-scale photovoltaic power station equipment begins retiring after 2030, waste volumes in remote regions will rise.
