NSG Group is pleased to announce the successful completion of a demonstration experiment to manufacture float glass using cover glass recovered from end-of-life photovoltaic (PV) modules. More than a decade has passed since the large-scale introduction of photovoltaic power generation systems in Japan. As these systems gradually approach the end of their service lives, the number of decommissioned PV panels is expected to increase sharply after 2030. Therefore, establishing technologies that enable proper material separation and closed-loop recycling has become an increasingly important social issue.
However, the special composition of photovoltaic cover glass, designed to enhance module performance, and the strong adhesives used to ensure long-term durability have traditionally made recycling difficult.
In this demonstration experiment, the separation and extraction of cover glass were carried out by Tokuyama Corporation at its photovoltaic panel recycling demonstration facility in Nanporo, Hokkaido, Japan, using its “low-temperature thermal decomposition recycling technology.”
In February this year, NSG conducted a production test at the float furnace at its Chiba Plant in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, using recovered cover glass as a partial raw material. The test assessed its impact on product quality and the manufacturing process. The results confirmed that recovered cover glass can be effectively used under specified conditions, demonstrating the feasibility of horizontally recycling it into float glass.
